เข็มทิศ
เข็มทิศ คือเครื่องมือที่แสดงจุดทิศหลักที่ใช้สำหรับการเดินเรือและการกำหนดทิศทางด้านภูมิศาสตร์ โดยทั่วไปประกอบด้วยเข็มแม่เหล็กหรือส่วนประกอบอื่น ๆ อย่างหน้าปัดเข็มทิศหรือวงกลมแสดงทิศที่ใช้หมุนเพื่อจัดตำแหน่งตัวเองไปที่ทิศเหนือแม่เหล็ก ส่วนวิธีอื่น ๆ ได้แก่ ไจโรสโคป, แมกนีโตมิเตอร์ และตัวรับจีพีเอส
เข็มทิศมักแสดงมุมในรูปองศา: ทิศเหนือเทียบเท่ากับ 0° และตัวเลขมุมเพิ่มขึ้นตามเข็มนาฬิกา ดังนั้น ทิศตะวันออกเทียบเท่ากับ 90° ทิศใต้คือ 180° และทิศตะวันตกคือ 270° จำนวนเหล่านี้บนเข็มทิศแสดงมุมทิศหรือแบริ่งที่มักระบุเป็นองศา ถ้าทราบมุมบ่ายเบนท้องถิ่นระหว่างทิศเหนือแม่เหล็กและทิศเหนือจริง จะทำให้ทิศทางของทิศเหนือแม่เหล็กเทียบเท่ากับทิศเหนือจริง
ในบรรดาสี่ยอดสิ่งประดิษฐ์ เข็มทิศแม่เหล็กเป็นสิ่งแรกที่ได้รับการคิดค้นในฐานะอุปกรณ์ทำนายที่เริ่มใช้ตั้งแต่จีนสมัยราชวงศ์ฮั่น (ตั้งแต่ ประมาณ 206 ปีก่อนคริสต์ศักราช)[1][2] และภายหลังนำมาใช้เป็นอุปกรณ์เดินทางในจีนสมัยราชวงศ์ซ่ง (ช่วงคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 11)[3][4][5] มีการบันทึกการใช้งานเข็มทิศในยุโรปตะวันตกและโลกอิสลามครั้งแรกเกิดขึ้นประมาณ ค.ศ. 1190[6][7]
การบอกทิศทางแบบมุมทิศ (Azimuth)
เป็นวิธีการที่คิดขึ้นมาเพื่อใช้ในการบอกทิศทาง คือวัดขนาดของมุมทางราบที่ วัดจากแนวทิศเหนือหลักเวียนตามเข็มนาฬิกามาบรรจบกับแนวเป้าหมาย ที่ต้องการมุมทิศนี้จะมีค่าตั้งแต่ 0-360 องศา และเมื่อวัดมุมจากเส้นฐานทิศเหนือหลักชนิดใดก็เรียกทิศเหนือตามหลักนั้น
การบอกทิศทางแบบแบริง (Bearing)
คือการบอกทิศทางเป็นค่าของมุมในแนวราบ ซึ่งวัดจากแนวทิศเหนือหลักไปยังแนวเป้าหมายในทิศทางตะวันออกหรือตะวันตก หรือวัดจากแนวทิศใต้หลักไปแนวเป้าหมายทิศตะวันออกหรือตะวันตก ดังนั้นขนาดของมุมแบริงจะมีค่าไม่เกิน 90 องศาการอ่านค่ามุมแบบแบริงจะเริ่มต้นด้วยทิศหลัก เช่นทิศทาง AB เบนจากทิศเหนือไปทิศตะวันตกเป็นมุม 75 องศา เรียกทิศทาง AB นั้นว่า มีมุมแบริง 75 องศาตะวันตก

เข็มทิศแบบแรกในจีนสมัยราชวงศ์ฮั่นทำมาจากแร่แม่เหล็ก (lodestone)[2][8] ต่อมาจึงทำเข็มทิศด้วยเข็มเหล็กที่ดึงดูดด้วยแร่แม่เหล็ก ซึ่ง Shen Kuo อธิบายว่าปรากฏขึ้นในจีนสมัยราชวงศ์ซ่งเมื่อ ค.ศ. 1088[9] เข็มทิศแบบแห้งเริ่มปรากฏขึ้นในยุโรปสมัยกลางและโลกอิสลามประมาณ ค.ศ. 1300[10][7] หลังจากนั้น ในช่วงต้นคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 20 จึงมีการแทนที่ด้วยเข็มทิศแม่เหล็กแบบเติมของเหลว[11]
