Sedan is the biggest city in Chautauqua County, Kansas, United States. It is also the county seat of Chautaqua County. In 2020, 1,000 people lived there.[3]

History

Sedan was created in 1871.[4] The city was named after the 1870 Battle of Sedan.[5] Sedan was incorporated as a city in 1876.[6]

Geography

Sedan is at 37°7′42″N 96°11′5″W / 37.12833°N 96.18472°W / 37.12833; -96.18472 (37.128456, -96.184825). It is a close middle-point between New York City and Los Angeles. The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.82 square miles (2.12 km2). All of it is land.[2]

Climate

Sedan has hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system says that Sedan has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[7]

2020 census

The 2020 census says that there were 1,000 people, 422 households, and 222 families living in Sedan. Of the households, 65.6% owned their home and 34.4% rented their home.

The median age was 45.5 years. Of the people, 83.6% were White, 4.6% were Native American, 0.9% were Black, 0.8% were Asian, 6.0% were from some other race, and 4.1% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.2% of the people.[3][8]

2010 census

The 2010 census says that there were 1,124 people, 482 households, and 269 families living in Sedan.[9]

Education

Sedan is a part of USD 286 Chautauqua County. Chautauqua County schools were merged in Sedan through school unification.[10]

Before school unification, the Sedan Blue Devils won the Kansas State High School class B baseball championship in 1973 and 2011.[11]
