Ghulam Sughra is a human rights activist in Pakistan. She is the head of the "Marvi Rural Development Organization" (MRDO). In 2011 she received the International Women of Courage Award from the U.S. Department of State.[1][2]
Sughra was born in Sindh Province in Pakistan. She was married at the age of 12. Six years later, she was the first woman in her village to divorce. When she tried to go to school, her brothers beat her. So she studied at home. Sughra became the first girl in her village to finish secondary school. Later she was the first teacher in the first school for girls.[3]
Ghulam Sughra started the Marvi Rural Development Organization (MRDO) in her village. The MRDO works for education, health, and human rights.[1] It also loans money for women to start small businesses.[3]
