Gañou o Globo de Ouro por Longtime Companion en 1991 e por Short Cuts en 1993 nas categorías de mellor actor secundario e por mención especial ó elenco coral. Tamén foi nomeado ós Premios Óscar por Longtime Companion. É coñecido entre outros papeis pola súa participación en X-Men e en X2 onde interpreta o "Senador Robert Kelly".
