Alexander Stephen and Sons

L'entreprise est fondée par Alexander Stephen qui commence à construire des bateaux à Burghead dans le Moray Firth en 1750. En 1793, William Stephen établit un chantier naval à Footdee près d'Aberdeen. En 1813, un autre membre de la famille, aussi appelé William, installe un chantier à Arbroath.

Alexander Stephen, un membre de la famille de la troisième génération, fusionne les entreprises d'Aberdeen et Arbroath en 1828. Après la fermeture du site d'Aberdeen en 1829, il déplace la production à Dundee en 1842. En 1850 Alexander Stephen arrange un bail avec le chantier Kelvinhaugh à Glasgow de Robert Black, pour une durée de vingt ans à partir de mai 1851. Le site du chantier Kelvinhaugh est maintenant Yorkhill Quay. Le chantier d'Arbroath est finalement fermé en 1857. En raison des restrictions de taille de la cour Kelvinhaugh, ainsi que l'expiration imminente du contrat de location, en 1870, l'entreprise s'installe à Glasgow sur un nouveau site à Linthouse. Le chantier naval de Dundee est vendu à la Dundee Shipbuilders' Companyen 1893.

En 1883, le vapeur Daphne, chavire après son lancement au chantier de Linthouse, 124 ouvriers perdent la vie.

En 1968, le chantier est incorporé à la nouvelle structure Upper Clyde Shipbuilders et ferme en 1971 après que cette structure s'effondre.
