Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes), a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Significant Lifeforms

Please stop your mass changes for "significant lifeforms" on year articles. Walsh90210 (talk) 23:29, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

I’m just trying to standardise it and allow for notable plants and fungus to be mentioned. Legendarycool (talk) 23:31, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
There are not enough "notable plants and fungus" from 2000+ years ago to require a "standardized" form on year articles. Walsh90210 (talk) 23:33, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
would you prefer a separate heading then? Legendarycool (talk) 23:34, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
For the vast majority of these years, the correct thing to have is "nothing". Is there even one year between 1000BC and 200BC where there are notable events about a tree? Walsh90210 (talk) 23:36, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
There is E.g. ‘Panke Baobab’ and what about other non human things such as pets. Legendarycool (talk) 23:39, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
Also this is only in the germination/birth or death of organisms Legendarycool (talk) 23:39, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
That didn't answer my question. Can any of these be tied to a specific year, or even decade? When the answer is always (or almost always) "no", there is no need to "standardize" on a heading system to accommodate it. Walsh90210 (talk) 23:45, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
We have exact dates to the year for many trees. As for the issue with standardisation, it is essential for speedy navigation and understanding of any text. Legendarycool (talk) 23:48, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
I have said everything I have to say here, and have started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Years about these changes. Please note WP:FAIT; Editors who are collectively or individually making large numbers of similar edits, and are apprised that those edits are controversial or disputed, are expected to attempt to resolve the dispute through discussion. Walsh90210 (talk) 23:54, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
Please self-revert these changes now. Typically you should discuss with other editors before making mass changes, because they're difficult undo. – Joe (talk) 12:33, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
Please look at the current discussion going on, on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Years. Legendarycool (talk) 13:38, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I've seen it. I'm asking you as an administrator to revert these edits now and not wait for that discussion to reach its conclusion. – Joe (talk) 15:29, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Red imported fire ants in Australia, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Solenopsis (genus). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
