Kyoko

I've been a registered user of Wikipedia since January 2006, and I've written and contributed to a number of Good and Featured articles. My edit count can be seen here. I can also be found at the Spanish, French, and Simple English Wikpedias. Not all Wikimedia Kyoko accounts have been created by me, so if you see of these accounts act maliciously, please block them if you are able, and notify me here.

10 May 2007 was named Kyoko's Day, in honour of me, by Phaedriel. Thank you, Phaedriel!

I try to treat people with compassion and to do the right thing, but I also have to protect myself, by keeping certain things private, and not tolerating certain kinds of messages. I hope you understand. If you feel that I have hurt your feelings or made a mistake, please tell me.

• Literature, especially Quebec literature and French literature. I read a bit of everything: novels, poetry, plays, etc. I wrote significant portions of articles on The Count of Monte Cristo, Norwegian Wood, and The Lais of Marie de France. I've also contributed a bit towards The Tale of Genji and the poem Orlando furioso.

• Music. I listen to a wide range of music from Bach to rock. One day I hope to improve the articles on the operas Le Devin du Village and Atys. I helped bring the operas Agrippina and Orfeo ed Euridice to Good Article status, and the list of major opera composers to Featured List status. Other articles I've created or expanded include Les nuits d'été and Holiday Symphony. I also translated Comédie-Italienne from the French.

• Television, such as Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Atlantis, and various anime series. I also began the article on the voice actor Richard Epcar.

• Pulmonary hypertension or PH, something I had never even heard of until I was diagnosed with the idiopathic form of the disease. I've contributed towards Wikipedia's article about PH, and written or contributed towards articles about some medicines used in its treatment, such as ambrisentan, bosentan, sitaxsentan, treprostinil, epoprostenol, iloprost, sildenafil, and tadalafil. I've also created articles on pulmonic regurgitation (a medical sign) and atrial septostomy, a surgical procedure that has been used in some PH patients as a stopgap treatment until an organ transplant can be done.

• Lung transplantation and heart-lung transplants, which are the only definitive cures for my form of PH. I wrote the initial version of the lung transplant article, as well as the related articles on the lung allocation score and the ventilation/perfusion scan. I'm also interested in organ transplantation in general.

• Cystic fibrosis or CF, something I became interested in because someone with CF once went to the same school I did. The article on CF is a featured article, but I only had a small part in its development. Whenever I get around to it, I might translate more content from its French Wikipédia article as well as from other languages.

• Miscellaneous. I helped bring Bengali Language Movement to Featured Article status, and wrote the introductions of FA-status Biman Bangladesh Airlines and GA-status Sitakunda Upazila. Other assorted articles that I have created include stubs on the translators Royall Tyler and Anthony M. Esolen.

• translating missing content from French Wikipédia to English Wikipedia and vice versa. Many of the medicine-related articles in particular need improvement and/or creation on French Wikipédia.

• improving articles related to medicine, especially in the areas of pulmonology, nephrology, and cardiology.

This last project is something I feel pretty strongly about. Many of the Wikipedia articles relating to medicine and science seem to be written towards a doctor's or scientist's point of view, rather than that of a patient or interested layperson. I do not want to "dumb down" the articles, just make them more understandable to everyone, without diluting their scientific content.

It's a hard task to accomplish, because as I've said on the Science reference desk, using scientific jargon saves time for people who are already familiar with the field, while it confuses or frustrates others. I feel that Wikipedia should be for everyone, both novices and experts, and I hope that there is some middle ground that will satisfy everybody.
