Pen leading the people is a name given to two photographies taken by Stéphane Mahé and Martin Argyroglo on 14 January 2015, in Paris.

Background

After the November 2015 Paris attacks, France receives different marks of solidarity across the world in order to pay a tribute to victims of the terrorist attacks. On Sunday 11 January, a solidarity march is organized in Paris to honour the memory of these people. This march comprises both world leaders and French citizens.

Pictures shooting

The photographs were taken on 11 January 2015, Place de la Nation in Paris, on the occasion of the Republican marches[1].

The first image was taken at 17 hours[2] by Stéphane Mahé photographer for the Reuters agency. At the initiative of the Minister of Culture and Communication Fleur Pellerin, the photograph was displayed in large format (13 meters of 8) on the front of the Centre Pompidou [3] · [4]. She also dominated the The Times , the12 January 20156 , and was used by other newspapers 7 , Note 1 . Regarding his work, Stéphane Mahé clarified the following:

"I arrived around 5 pm, the light was very soft. I had to stay for three quarters of an hour, I turned around the statue while waiting for the photograph to be composed, gathering different elements ... The pencil, the French flag, the statue. It returned in the image 8 . "

A second image is the work of freelance photographer Martin Argyroglo (based in Paris, was born in 1983) 1 . Taking around 20 hours, the photograph was shared over 5,000 times on Twitter on 12 January 1 and chosen for one of L'Observateur that week. The name was given by its author Nation 9 . He said, concerning his work:

"First I make horizontal photographs, cutting the statue. The result is not satisfactory. I then opted for a vertical composition 9 . "
