Criticism section lacks neutral point of view

Greetings Wikipedians! In my humble opinion, the titles of the sub-sections are not neutral, using language that would be more at home in an advertisement or a speech: "Fighting hydropower", "Fighting rooftop solar panels", "Electoral fraud" (particularly egregious) and "Environmental harm." I'm not saying they're wrong, but they don't meet the test of avoiding advocacy. Wikipedia articles are supposed to be written from a neutral point of view , one of our fundamental principles (see Five Pillars). I'm going re-phrase these titles to make them more neutral. I'm not employed by NextEra, although I did work there long ago. Cordially, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 17:03, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Infobox changes request

Hi Wikipedia, I'm Matt and I work for NextEra Energy. I'm hoping to do a pretty big overhaul of the article (I made a draft and a diff for an easy comparison) but I know I can't make those changes myself due to my COI. I'll make requests here on the Talk page.

To kick things off, I was hoping to make some updates to the article's infobox. Those changes include:

  • Adding the former name of the company
  • Adding the HQ address
  • Updating Armando Pimentel's name to include "Jr.", as that is his name
  • Updating the financial information to the numbers in the most recent 10-K
  • Updating and streamlining employee figures to most recent numbers
  • Changing "Divisions" to "Subsidiaries" and removing NextEra Energy Partners and NextEra Energy Services to more accurately reflect how the business units are arranged

The full infobox is in the box below.

Update Request - History

Hi editors, while my infobox update request is being considered, I thought I'd also make two small requests of the article body.

I request that we change the Corporate history heading to simply History as the latter seems to me to be more concise.

I also request that we change the first sentence of History from:

To

  • NextEra Energy traces its origins to 1925 with the formation of Florida Power & Light and the formation of FPL Group in 1984.[2]

Because

  • This is a more complete and accurate summation of the origins of the company.

Please let me know what you think! Happy to answer any questions. - NextEraMatt (talk) 16:06, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

History update request 2

Hi editors, for my next request I propose to expand the History section with some more information to flesh out the section.

First, I propose moving the sentence starting with "FPL Group changed its name" to new paragraph.

Second, I propose adding the content below after the sentence ending with "FPL Group in 1984":

The company purchased Colonial Penn in 1985[1] and sold it in 1991.[2] In 1998, FPL Group created FPL Energy, a subsidiary to manage FPL Group efforts outside of FPL's service area.[1] The same year, the company moved to acquire 37 power stations in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.[3] After a federal ruling would have limited the company's access to the New England power grid, FPL Group attempted to break off its purchase agreement in Maine,[4] but ultimately completed the purchase in March 1999.[5]

This helps flesh out the section more with information from the early years of FPL group using reliable sources. Please let me know what you think! If editors are interested, I made a draft and a diff showing what I hope to achieve with this article. Thanks in advance for reviewing. NextEraMatt (talk) 18:08, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

History update request 3

Hi editors, for my next request I'll stay in the History section with an eye for further expansion.

My next request is to add the following in a new paragraph after the sentence ending "March 1999":

Through the early 2000s, FPL Group was the subject of multiple merger discussions, including with Iberdrola,[1][2] Entergy,[3] and Constellation Energy.[4]

Functionally what this does is summarize some of the sentences in the Mergers and acquisitions section and move that content to History. Please let me know what you think. NextEraMatt (talk) 17:34, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

Merger content removal

Hi editors, with the last change made by Encoded, there's some content in the Mergers and acquisitions section that is now redundant, as it has been summarized in the Corporate history section.

Because of that, I propose removing the first, second, third, and fifth paragraphs of the Mergers section. Please let me know what you think. NextEraMatt (talk) 14:24, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

History request 4

Hi editors, for my next request, I propose adding the following sentences immediately after the sentence ending "and Constellation Energy".

The Environmental Protection Agency recognized FPL Group for achieving its goal to reduce its emissions by 21 percent per kilowatt hour in 2008.[1] The FPL Group Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm, donated $1 million to the Salvation Army in 2009 to help customers in danger of having service turned off pay their power bills.[2]

History request 5

Hi editors, continuing with my requests for the History section, I propose revising the current second-to-last sentence in the section related to the company's name change, which at present is unsourced. I propose changing it to the following and adding some additional information about where it was operating at the time, something like this:

Immediately after that sentence, I also propose adding the following sentences, which slightly rework the sentence in the Politics section and the first sentence of the Litigation section, rendering both redundant.

All together, it looks like this:

Extended content

The following year, FPL Group rebranded as NextEra Energy. At the time, it provided power in 28 states and Canada.[1]

NextEra Energy subsidiary New Hampshire Transmission (NHT) reached a $6.8 million settlement with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in 2016 after charging customers for the development of an electric power transmission project that was not approved.[5][6] During the 2016 Republican Party presidential primaries, NextEra Energy donated $1 million to a super PAC supporting Jeb Bush's candidacy.[4]

  • Of note, the missing ref is the Palm Beach Post article by Susan Salisbury already cited in the article.

I think this rework more accurately reflects the information available in reliable sources and removes an unnecessary subhead that is only there for a single sentence.

NHT and Politics removal

Hi editors, with the recent edits made by Encoded, there's some content that's been made redundant. I propose the removing the following:

Please let me know what you think. NextEraMatt (talk) 13:33, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

Done - I'm satisfied that both are included in the History section already. Encoded   Talk 💬 09:37, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

Source error and slight reorganization

Hi editors, I noticed that the article has a sourcing error and one of the sentences is out of place chronologically in the History section. I propose moving the second-to-last sentence in History to the end of the fourth paragraph and modifying the reference name to "PBP12", which should fix the issue.

All together, it would look like this:

Extended content

The Environmental Protection Agency recognized FPL Group for achieving its goal to reduce its emissions by 21 percent per kilowatt hour in 2008.[1] The FPL Group Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm, donated $1 million to the Salvation Army in 2009 to help customers in danger of having service turned off pay their power bills.[2]The following year, FPL Group rebranded as NextEra Energy. At the time, it provided power in 28 states and Canada.[3]

Please let me know if that makes sense. NextEraMatt (talk) 17:55, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

To (bolded for clarity):

  • Remove the second-to-last paragraph, which begins with "The following year" (it is now redundant and out of place chronologically)

@Zippybonzo: Thanks so much! I actually have a whole new draft of the article in my user space that details all the changes I am hoping to get implemented, with a diff made based on the article as of Jan. 18 and notes on the changes on the draft Talk page. I recognize it is a huge ask to review a whole draft like that and am happy to keep making smaller requests, but that should hopefully give you an idea of what I'm hoping to accomplish.
In the short term, the second-to-last sentence in the Corporate history section, with the "verification needed" tag, is now redundant.
My colleague FPL Daniel has also been trying to request some changes on the Florida Power & Light article and has a pretty basic request to update the infobox if you were at all interested in taking a look! I really appreciate all the help here. NextEraMatt (talk) 18:16, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

History Cleanup and Addition

Hi editors, following up on my previous request with a fresh one here. This is a two-parter:

Part 1: I request to remove the final three sentences of the Corporate history section. The sentences "The following year, FPL Group rebranded as NextEra Energy. At the time, it provided power in 28 states and Canada." are redundant (already in the section two paragraphs earlier). The sentence "Nextera Energy is incorporated in Florida." doesn't really fit in the History section, though I acknowledge that it is not explicitly stated elsewhere in the article where the company is incorporated. I will propose creating a Company overview section in the future that should make it more clear where the company is headquartered.

Part 2: I request to add the following sentence immediately after Through the early 2000s, FPL Group was the subject of multiple merger discussions, including with Iberdrola, Entergy, and Constellation Energy:

In 2005, FPL Group acquired Gexa Energy.[1]

Please let me know what you think. Thanks for taking a look! @Encoded and Zippybonzo: pinging both of you here in case you are interested in reviewing this request as you both have reviewed my requests in the past. NextEraMatt (talk) 12:21, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Nuclear Energy Institute

Hi editors, for my next request, I wanted to see what the community thought of replacing the first paragraph of Litigation with the following:

Extended content

In 2018, NextEra Energy and Entergy left the Nuclear Energy Institute.[1] In February of that year, it filed a lawsuit against the Institute alleging that the trade group had inappropriately cut off its access to a database of nuclear power workers. The lawsuit stated NEE disagreed with the Institute's priorities and that the trade group was advocating for policies that would be damaging to NextEra Energy's business; it also alleged the group was extorting NextEra Energy for $860,000 to regain access to the database. The Institute called the allegations "baseless".[2] A judge in Florida rejected NEE's claims in September 2018.[3]

I think these changes summarize the events in a neutral way, remove some of the jargon to make things easier to understand, and make the paragraph more complete by adding the resolution of the lawsuit.

If those changes are acceptable, I also propose that after they are made that they would be moved up to the end of the Corporate history section. My draft shows the changes in full context for anyone curious.

Please let me know what you think, and thanks in advance for taking a look. NextEraMatt (talk) 14:25, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

Litigation Request 2

Hi editors, for my next request, I suggest taking a look at the last two paragraphs of the Litigation section. I think at the moment there is a bit too much detail and they can be summarized better. I am also not sure Renew Economy meets the requirements for a reliable source. The third paragraph also does not include the conclusion of events, so now that we know what happened, I suggest including the resolution. The box below has my suggested text:

Extended content

The same year, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a NEE claim for a $97 million tax deduction related to the disposal of nuclear waste.[1] Also in 2018, the company received a cease and desist order related to the construction of wind turbines in Oklahoma pending appropriate permitting from the Federal Aviation Administration or United States Department of Defense.[2] The construction was canceled in May 2019.[3]

Please let me know what you think. Happy to answer any questions I can. @Encoded: would you be willing to take a look at this request as well? NextEraMatt (talk) 14:34, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
