Edwin Lindsay

I have added the missing son Edwin, and a reference to his incarceration on Papa Stour. Peerage.com has a couple of references to his brother Richard being sent to Shapinsay, but they may have mixed the stories up. Ben MacDui (Talk) 18:13, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

I don't want to be critical but I came to this article from the will of Richard Atkinson, a Jamaica merchant and planter who died in 1786, and who - before Balcarres's appointment as Governor of Jamaica - was involved with him in a number of matters and who provided annuities for several Balcarres kin, both direct and by marriage. Balcarres and Atkinson descendants retained interests in Jamaica until and after the end of slavery there and the recent ucl database on slave compensation indicates that one Atkinson concern with Balcarres was the supply of slave labour to British military bases in the island - a fairly lucrative business in itself, and usually free of the risks attached to planting. The Governorship itself was a pretty rewarding one, in financial terms. Balcarres clearly had good relations with Dundas, who would have had a considerable say in his appointment. There's obviously room for expansion here.Delahays (talk) 12:53, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Memorial inscription

The current source has both a incorrect title, naming him as 7th Earl not 6th Earl, and an incorrect year of birth of 1750. Presumably these are transcription errors? The title has just been corrected by an IP editor. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:59, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

It also titles him "Lord Lindsay and Balneill", which appears nowhere else in this article. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:04, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
