Now that the Electorate has been renamed, should this page be moved to the Ohariu (NZ electorate) page? wikicharlie23 08:31, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

sort of? The seat has been renamed Ōhariu, which means redirecting both pages to the new one. But the old seats exists until the election. So, I guess, we wait? Rocklaw (talk) 09:56, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

It seems that Ōhariu is going to become Ōhāriu (with a macron on the a) in the upcoming election. See, for example, the Electoral Commission's "Find My Electorate" tool, and elsewhere on that website. I presume the page should be moved to Ōhāriu, but do we do it now or wait until the current term of Parliament ends? If we wait, do we want a redirect here from Ōhāriu until then? -- Vardion (talk) 02:19, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

The second macron seems to be a done deal, and we've moved the article. But I haven't been able to find a source anywhere that discusses the change, only sources that now use the two-macron version. Has anybody seen where this comes from? Changes of this nature are initiated by the Representation Committee, and I've looked at their 2014 report, but they don't give anything away. On page 15, it makes some general statement under the heading 'MACRONS FOR ELECTORATES WITH MĀORI NAMES': "Electorate names which include macrons, have applied the orthographic conventions of the Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission). The Commission notes that the General electorate names are derived from official or recorded geographic place names. Some of those place names pre-date the orthographic conventions and therefore do not have macrons. The Commission has used macrons where it considers it to be appropriate on advice from Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori. It notes that the names with macrons have not been approved as official geographic names for the corresponding places by the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa. The Commission has applied macrons to assist with correct pronunciation of the electorate names." Schwede66 17:11, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

• proposed electoral districts 2013 wellington region.pdf uses single macron Ōhariu and discusses boundary changes only.
• Objections to the Proposed Boundaries has two objections to Wadestown being included in the electorate, and two objections to the name, with suggested name as either Wellington West or Wellington North.
• Counter-Objections to Objections on the Proposed Boundaries states that Counter-objection N45-601:

  Objects to the suggestions to change the name of the electorate to English names.
  Suggested solution: Retain the name 'Ōhāriu' with a macron on 'hā'. An alternative name of 'Kauhau' could be considered as the local maunga.

• In Schedule D: Objections and counter-objections received and the decision of the Commission in each case the Commission disallows the two boundary objections and the two English name suggestions while allowing the counter-objection in favour of a double macron Ōhāriu.
• In the Report of the Representation Commission 2014 the commission switches to double-macron; The Commission has moved excess population from Wadestown into the Ōhāriu electorate. It also discusses macrons specifically - as Schwede66 quoted above (MACRONS FOR ELECTORATES WITH MĀORI NAMES).
