Lemay is a City located in St. Louis County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the City had a total population of 22,975.

Lemay is located at 38°31'57" North, 90°17'7" West (38.532552, -90.285332)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the City has a total area of 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²). 11.3 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.19% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 22,975 people, 8,986 households, and 5,390 families residing in the City. The population density is 2,528.0/km² (3,959.0/mi²). There are 7,580 housing units at an average Value at $61,058.79 (1,743.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the City is 54.01% White, 34.52% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 4.96% from two or more races. 6.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,186 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 9.6% are married couples living together, 46.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 3.99.

In the City the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.0 males.

The median income for a household in the City is $22,559, and the median income for a family is $29,128. Males have a median income of $26,886 versus $17,388 for females. The per capita income for the City is $18,730. 39.4% of the population and 17.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.2% of those under the age of 18 and 21.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Problems in education

The only residing public school in Lemay is the Hancock Place District. it is reported in the 2004 St.Louis County Public School Investagtion that it is an unclean and over all "bad teaching school". The (SCPSI) published a pamphlet titled A Movement Against "Dropping Out",it included percentages of a drop out rate in south county public school Hancock Place High School issued a 42.7% drop outrate ranking it the worst in St.Louis County besides Bayless School District of 9.4%,The overall Graduation rate is only 47.2%,and 10.1% are G.E.D. Graduates.The School also has a huge problem in fighting, averaging 103.7 fights in a year Ranking it the worst in All of The St.Louis Metro area, besides Vashon's School District(101.7).

Music

Lemay is known for it's Underground Midwest fast flows adopted by Under ground Rapers,Brotha Lynch Hung, The Wet Gremlinz, The Krazy Bosnians, and Sinister X. The Midwest fast flows is created by Twista and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.The Lemay Rap scene is filled with references to Marijuana(known as "Kush"),Sexual acts,Gruesome Violence,Gangs,and drug traffecting.

Gang Violence

In the Mid 80's many North St.Louis residents moved south to Soulard,and Lemay bringing Gangs with them. Lemay was once an alright place to live Until The Lambert International Buy outs in Kinloch, Missouri taking away more than a 1,000 homes. The yearly C.R.A.S.H report has stated that there 3 Gangs in Lemay The E Mob (Bloods), Primm Street Crips, and The G.D. (Gangsta Disciples). As of 2005 there has been 69 gang related deaths.

Lemay Casino

A Casino project is curently under devolepment and the company Pinnacle has announced that it will spend $265,000,000 almost doubling it's Las Vegas casino's bank credit line to create the a first Casino in South St.Louis County. The project will also feature a Film Theater,many restaurants,and a shopping center.The Lemay mayor Clarence Harmon was said to be very supportive of the projected,but later denied the reports stating "Your damn right I'm calling them liars I never proposed taking 800 jobs away from Dowtown St.Louis",But many residents are glad of "Project Lemay",saying it will help Lemay's economy.The casino is scheduled to be completed early 2007,and the entire project in early 2008.
