Description | Français : Le général de Beaupuy fut blessé à Château-Gontier. English: In October 1793, the Vendean troops crossed the Loire river to reach Granville, storming into Château-Gonthier on their way. As he injured, republican General Beaupuy is said to have cried out : « I couldn't conquer for the Republic, I shall die for her; » The drooping figure of the dying general offers a dramatic contrast with the victorious figure of the saber-wielding enemy. (But that's a legend, because Beaupuy died on Oktober 19th 1796 in the Black Forest in Germany.) | |||||||||||||||||
