Should this page be brought into conformity with the usage advocated by the largest denomination of LDS, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as American Latter-day Saints?Ascentury (talk) 17:37, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

No, because that would exclude members of the smaller denominations, who are included in "Latter Day Saints" but not "Latter-day Saints". Good Ol’factory ^(talk) 03:25, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Is there a criteria as to when a person should be removed from this category? For example Jason Derek Brown. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints qualifying him as an "American Latter Day Saints" at one time. However, he was excommunicated and there is no evidence that he has joined another "Latter Day Saint" group. He is currently on the FBI 10 most wanted list. I see this kind of thing all the time. People listed here that have left or been kicked out of various LDS sects, but are still listed in "American Latter Day Saints", but I’m unsure if they should be removed.--ARTEST4ECHO ^talk 14:05, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Brown's article mentions that he was a Mormon missionary in France, but it doesn't say anything about being excommunicated from the LDS Church. I would guess that he would be excommunicated, but I'm not sure we have reliable sources to back that up. As for the general issue, my understanding is that categories don't really reflect a past vs. current status. He will be in ‹The template Cat is being considered for merging.› Category:American Mormon missionaries because he was an American Mormon missionary at one time; we don't remove him from the category tree because he may not be an American Latter Day Saint anymore. On the other hand, there is ‹The template Cat is being considered for merging.› Category:Former Latter Day Saints. It's not really clear, I don't think.
