Biografía

Nacida en Missouri Valley, Iowa, el so padre, John, yera un destacáu xuglar. El debú teatral de Fischer tuvo llugar en Portland, Oregón, col famosu papel de Adrienne en The Celebrated Case. Ella actuó nos sos entamos en compañíes de teatru de repertoriu de la Mariña del Pacíficu, primero como actriz infantil y, más tarde, en papeles d'estrella inocente. La so creciente fama fixo que'l so padre formara la Margarita Fischer Stock Company, grupu teatral que viaxó a lo llargo de la Mariña del Pacíficu mientres dellos años.

Fischer conoció al so futuru home, el direutor cinematográficu Harry A. Pollard, cuando dambos actuaben n'obres de teatru de repertoriu en San Francisco. Unos años más tarde volvieron coincidir cuando trabayaben para Selig Polyscape Company, los estudios Independent Moving Pictures de Nueva York y, más palantre, Universal Pictures.

Ente los sos papeles más conocíos figura'l de la esclava Topsy[3] nel filme de 1913, basáu na novela de Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin, dirixíu por Otis Turner. Nel mesmu actuaba tamién Harry A. Pollard. Con esti papel Fischer ganó un contratu a llargu términu cola American Film Company, y recibió la reconocencia internacional como la American Beauty de la pantalla. Pollard dirixó años más tarde la superproducción d'Universal Uncle Tom's Cabin, estrenada en 1927. Nesta ocasión Fischer faía'l papel d'una más Madura Eliza.

N'abril de 1916 Fischer y el so home fundaron Pollard Picture Plays Corporation. Pollard dirixía y Fischer actuaba, collaborando dambos col productor George Lederer. La so primer producción foi The Pearl of Paradise, rodada en Los Angeles, Honolulu, y la Polinesia.

Mientres la Primer Guerra Mundial Fischer camudó'l so apellíu por Fisher, con cuenta d'evitar el sentimientu antialemán que se produció n'Estaos Xuníos.
